There is a famous saying, "Man proposes God disposes" . Every one try to be successful in their life and if one become successful they define their success by saying, "I am the self made man, I define my own success".
If it is like that then no one should be failure, but as per Bhagwad Gita if we desire to do something there are three factors involved into it, one the living entities, second the nature and third God (Krishna).
One can not define his own success but he has free will to desire something to do and according to his desire nature supports and finally it goes to Krishna-The supreme personality of Godhead for final sanction.
If Krishna sanction we become successful and if He does not we become failure no matter how much try.
So, moral of the story is whatever action we perform we must keep Krishna in center and our ultimate goal should be to please Krishna. If Krishna is pleased surely He will sanction our action and we become successful.
If we take incident of Ramayana, Ravana the demon king tried to achieve all three planets and he thrown out his own brother Vibhishana from his kingdom, everyone can say Ravana is very successful and Vibhishana is failure.
But when Vibhishana take shelter of Lord Rama, Lord Rama immediately give whole kingdom of Ravana to Vibhishana, without even tiny effort.
जो संपति सिव रावनहि दीन्हि दिएँ दस माथ।
सोइ संपदा बिभीषनहि सकुचि दीन्हि रघुनाथ॥
Finally, Who is failure and who is successful now? So, here we can see, Our Success & Failure depends on Krishna only.
