Actually Lord Rama could have easily done this task before that but He wanted to show the people who were opposing. Actually Lord made us an instrument to fullfill his own desires. In Bhagwad Gita Lord Krishna chose Arjuna to kill entire Kaurva armies, actually Arjuna did nothing but just followed Lord Krishna's order. Finally when Lord shows His universal form in front of Arjuna and all soldiers are going into the mouth of Krishna.
