There is an old famous saying, "As the food, So the mind", so we can understand the strong connection between our meal and mind. In our Vedic culture, people were more regulated on their eating and sleeping habits that is the reason they were so intelligent and powerful compare to Us.
Actually, there life were fully based on scriptures as it is mentioned in Bhagwad Gita Chapter 6.17:
युक्ताहारविहारस्य युक्तचेष्टस्य कर्मसु ।
युक्तस्वप्नावबोधस्य योगो à¤à¤µà¤¤ि दु:खहा ॥ १ॠ॥
He who is regulated in his habits of eating, sleeping, recreation and work can mitigate all material pains by practicing the yoga system.
Our food basically classified into three categories, i.e. Satva Guna (Mode of Goodness), Rajo Guna (Mode of Passion) and Tamo Guna (Mode of Ignorance).
The foods directly comes from nature, fresh and healthy and cooked in the mode of goodness is known as Satvik Food. And if we take that food in a mode of gratitude towards GOD and thanking them for providing natural foods for us to make us healthy and powerful then it gives purity to our heart and mind
In Bhagwad Gita Chapter 17.8 it is explained:
आयु:सत्त्वबलारोग्यसुखप्रीतिविवर्धना: ।
रस्या: स्निग्धा: स्थिरा हृद्या आहारा: सात्त्विकप्रिया: ॥ ८ ॥
Foods dear to those in the mode of goodness increase the duration of life, purify one’s existence and give strength, health, happiness and satisfaction. Such foods are juicy, fatty, wholesome, and pleasing to the heart.
More spicy and more delicious, sour, bitter, salty and cooked in the mode of passion is known as Rajsik Food. This type of food only gives a taste of our tongue and it increases our egos, anger and passion. It gives lust, desires, and impurity in our heart and mind.
In Bhagwad Gita Chapter 17.9 it is explained:
कट्वम्ललवणात्युष्णतीक्ष्णरूक्षविदाहिन: ।
आहारा राजसस्येष्टा दु:खशोकामयप्रदा: ॥ ९ ॥
Foods that are too bitter, too sour, salty, hot, pungent, dry and burning are dear to those in the mode of passion. Such foods cause distress, misery and disease.
Unfresh and unhealthy, rejected and heavy to digest and cooked in the mode of Ignorance is known as Tamsik Food. This type of food doesn't give taste and health, but increase negativity, animalistic behavior, fear and anger. It gives lust, anger, frustration and fear in our heart and mind.
In Bhagwad Gita Chapter 17.10 it is explained:
यातयामं गतरसं पूति पर्युषितं च यत् ।
उच्छिष्टमपि चामेध्यं à¤ोजनं तामसप्रियम् ॥ १० ॥
Food prepared more than three hours before being eaten, food that is tasteless, decomposed and putrid, and food consisting of remnants and untouchable things is dear to those in the mode of darkness.
So here we can see how our foods make an impact on our mind and soul. We need to be very much careful while eating foods, we do not eat anything whatever we like to eat, but chose wisely what is best for our health and mind.
We should try to ignore packaged foods and drinks which are now easily available everywhere in the markets and easily we can get it, instead we should try to take the natural way of foods myself. Grains, fruits, juices etc.
